Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakech, Morocco

Jemaa el-Fna is the main square and market place in Marrakech medina (old city). It is a stimulating, colourful and fascinating place. First, it seems to be a total chaos, but once you have been walking around a few times, you start to "get it". I love its lights, sounds, smells, colours. Visually it is a real photographer's dream, but still not too easy to shoot. Most Moroccans don't like to be photographed, or they want money for it, especially in Jemaa el-Fna. So you have to be polite, quick and inconspicuous.

With a 50 mm F1.8 fast lens and a full-frame camera, I could get wonderful hand-held night photos in very dark conditions. I wanted to capture the moments and people in a documentary style, a style that would reflect the fast temporary moments of the vivid market place.
